Mortar is the material that binds brick and stone. Years of weathering causes mortar joints to deteriorate. When water is absorbed into mortar, it freezes during the winter months, expanding within the mortar and causing it to crumble. Tuckpointing is the process of grinding out old, deteriorated mortar and replacing it with new material. Our skilled crew carefully selects the proper matrial mix and tools to compliment your existing mortar color and joint design. This saves you money in the long run- it’s (much) cheaper to replace mortar than a whole deteriorated wall!
Chimneys are usually the first part of a masonry building to manifest signs of deterioration. This is mostly because chimneys are constantly bombarded by the Chicago rain and snow. When a chimney becomes saturated with moisture and the temperature drops below freezing, damage can and does occur. Cracked or broken cap will result in water penetration to the top courses of your chimney and will cause disintegration to the point where masonry repair is mandatory. When most of the brick on a chimney are spalling, flaking, cracking, displacing or even missing it is a danger and you know it is time to rebuild the chimney.
When you have a couple of damaged bricks on the wall and moisture finds its way into the defected brick and freezes, it will cause the brick to spall, deflect, or displace. Once that happens the brick is useless as it offers no structural support to the masonry wall. Replacing the damaged brick will prevent water damage from spreading to the remaining healthy brick. We work with variety of brick suppliers to insure the closest match to your existing brick.
